Malibu Family Photographer | Natural Family Photos at El Matador Beach
Looking for a Malibu family photographer? Malibu is one of the most beautiful places in Southern California for family photos, offering dramatic cliffs, sandy beaches, and incredible sunsets. Being a Malibu family photographer for more than 20 years, I’ve found that the best Malibu family sessions are relaxed, playful, and focused on genuine connection rather than perfect poses. Whether you choose El Matador Beach or another Malibu location, my goal is to create photographs that help you remember exactly what this season of life felt like.
If you’re searching for a Malibu family photographer, chances are you’re looking for more than just beautiful beach photos.
You want images that feel like your family.
The way your little one reaches for your hand. The way your kids laugh when they’re chasing the waves. The hugs that happen naturally when no one is thinking about the camera.
Those are the moments I love photographing.
I’ve been photographing families for more than 20 years, and one thing I’ve learned is that the best family photos don’t happen when everyone is standing perfectly still looking at the camera. They happen when families are simply enjoying being together.
That’s why my sessions are relaxed, playful, and filled with movement. We’ll walk along the shoreline, explore the beach, play with your children, and let the session unfold naturally. Parents are often surprised by how quickly the session flies by, and one of the comments I hear most often afterward is, “That was so much easier and more fun than I expected.”
Those relaxed moments are what create photographs you’ll treasure years from now.

Daniele’s Tip: If you’re hoping for a fall family session in Malibu, don’t wait until September to book! My fall calendar typically fills during the summer, especially weekend dates.
Why Malibu Is One of My Favorite Places for Family Photos
I’ve photographed families all over Ventura County, Santa Barbara, and Los Angeles, but Malibu continues to be one of my favorite places for family sessions!
Every beach has its own personality.
Some offer wide stretches of sand and vibrant blue water. Others have dramatic cliffs, rocky coves, or grassy overlooks that make it feel like you’re visiting several locations in one evening.
That variety is one of the reasons I recommend Malibu so often. Instead of every image looking the same, your gallery tells a story. We might begin with sweeping bluff views overlooking the Pacific Ocean, wander through golden grasses catching the last light of the day, and finish with your kids splashing barefoot in the surf as the sun sets.
It creates a gallery that’s both timeless and full of life.
For families visiting Southern California, it’s also an unforgettable experience. Many of my clients make an evening of it by enjoying dinner in Malibu after their session, turning family photos into one of their favorite vacation memories.
If you’re expecting, Malibu is just as magical for maternity sessions! You can read more in my guide to choosing a Malibu maternity photographer.
Why I Love El Matador Beach for Family Sessions
El Matador Beach is probably Malibu’s most iconic photography location, and it’s easy to see why.
Towering cliffs.
Sea caves.
Rock arches.
Golden sandstone formations.
When the sun begins to set, everything seems to glow.
It’s one of those places that feels uniquely California, and it’s unlike any other beach along the coast.
Of course, I’m not the only one who knows how beautiful it is.
On warm summer evenings, El Matador can get incredibly busy. Parking can be a serious pain! Visitors come to watch the sunset, photographers line the cliffs, and people gather on the beach to explore the rock formations.
The funny thing is, you’d never know it by looking through one of my galleries.
After photographing here for years, I’ve learned how to work with the light, the tides, and even the crowds to create images that feel peaceful and intimate. Knowing where to go and when to move makes all the difference.
This sweet family visited El Matador beach with their baby for her very first trip to the beach, and it couldn’t have been a more perfect evening. It was a jam packed evening at El Matador, but you’d never know it by looking at their photos.

What Makes a Great Malibu Family Photography Session?
One of my favorite things about photographing families in Malibu is that every session is completely different.
Your family has its own personality, your children are at their own unique stage, and the moments we capture together should reflect that.
I don’t want your family photos to feel like a checklist of poses where everyone is standing in a perfect line, smiling at the camera. While we will absolutely create a few classic portraits that you’ll love displaying in your home, the images that usually become the favorites are the ones in between.
The little moments.
Your toddler running toward the ocean.
The way your baby grabs your finger.
Your children laughing together.
The way you and your partner look at each other when you’re watching your kids play.
Those are the moments that tell your family’s story.
Over my many years as a Malibu family photographer, I’ve learned that the best images happen when families feel comfortable enough to relax and enjoy the experience. That’s why I keep my sessions playful and easygoing. I’ll give gentle direction when needed, but I also leave plenty of room for genuine moments to happen naturally.
Many parents come into their session worried that their children won’t cooperate or won’t sit still. The funny thing is, those things that parents sometimes worry about are often the exact things that create the most memorable images.
A child who wants to run down the beach? Perfect.
A sibling who can’t stop giggling? Even better.
A baby who wants to be held the entire time? Those cuddly moments are the ones you’ll want to remember.
My goal isn’t to create a picture-perfect version of your family. It’s to create photographs that feel like your family.
Choosing the Right Malibu Beach for Your Family Photos
One of the questions I get asked most often is, “Which Malibu beach is best for family photos?”
The answer depends on your family, your children, and the type of images you’re hoping to create.
That is one of the things I love most about photographing in Malibu. There isn’t just one beautiful location. Each beach has a completely different feel.
Some families want dramatic cliffs and iconic California scenery. Others want an easy walk to the water where young children can explore comfortably. Some families want a quiet, natural setting where they can focus on connection and play.
When we plan your session, I’ll help you choose a location that fits your family’s needs.
El Matador Beach
El Matador is one of Malibu’s most recognizable beaches and a favorite for families who love dramatic scenery.
The cliffs, rock formations, and ocean views create a beautiful variety of backdrops within one location. We can photograph overlooking the coastline, exploring the beach, and playing near the water all during the same session.
Because El Matador does require walking down stairs and navigating uneven terrain, I usually recommend it for families who are comfortable with a little adventure. It may not be the best choice for families with very young toddlers, expecting mothers who need an easier walk, or anyone with mobility concerns.
But for families who are up for it, the results are incredible.
El Pescador Beach
El Pescador is another beautiful Malibu option and one that offers a little more flexibility.
It has a gorgeous bluff area overlooking the ocean, along with a beach setting below. The walk down is more manageable than El Matador, making it a great option for families who want variety without as much of a physical challenge.
I love that we can create both scenic, wide-open portraits and playful beach images here.
Mugu Beach
For families who want a more accessible beach experience, Mugu Beach is a wonderful choice.
As a Malibu family photographer, one of the reasons I recommend it often is because it is much easier to access than some of Malibu’s more dramatic beaches. There is a large, flat parking area and a straightforward walk out to the water, which makes it a great option for families with small children or anyone who prefers an easier experience.
The water also photographs beautifully because it gets deeper close to shore, creating that gorgeous blue California coastline that looks incredible in photos.
I love that this location allows families to relax and focus on enjoying the session rather than worrying about a difficult hike.
What Should We Wear for Malibu Family Photos?
One of the most common questions I receive before a session is, “What should we wear?”
My biggest advice is to choose clothing that feels like you.
The goal is not to create a perfectly coordinated outfit where everyone looks identical. Instead, I recommend choosing soft, neutral colors and comfortable fabrics that photograph beautifully and allow your family to move naturally.
Malibu has such a beautiful, natural color palette, so I love clothing that complements the environment:
- Soft neutrals
- Creams and whites
- Warm earth tones
- Flowy fabrics
- Textures like linen, cotton, and knits
Movement is also really important for beach sessions. Dresses that move in the ocean breeze, linen shirts, and comfortable clothing that allows children to run and play all photograph beautifully.
The most important thing is that everyone feels comfortable. If your children are uncomfortable in their clothes, it will show. If they feel free to move and play, that is when the magic happens.
The Best Time of Day for Malibu Family Photos
The beautiful light is one of the reasons Malibu is such a popular photography destination.
For most beach sessions, I recommend scheduling during golden hour, the hour before sunset when the light becomes soft and warm.
This is when the California coastline looks its most magical.
The cliffs glow.
The ocean reflects the sunlight.
The shadows become softer.
And most importantly, your family doesn’t have to worry about harsh overhead sunlight.
Many parents worry that an evening session will be difficult with young children, especially if their normal bedtime is earlier. But I often find that kids surprise their parents. They are usually so excited to explore the beach that the session feels like an adventure rather than a photo shoot.
And because my sessions are relaxed and playful, we don’t spend the entire time asking children to sit still. We keep moving, exploring, and having fun.
When Should You Book Your Malibu Family Photos?
One of the biggest questions families ask me is when they should schedule their session.
My recommendation is always: don’t wait until the last minute.
The most popular times for Malibu family photos are during the spring and fall when the weather is comfortable and the sunsets are beautiful. These dates, especially weekend evenings, tend to fill quickly.
Most of my fall families book during the summer because they want to make sure they have the date, location, and timing that works best for their family.
I typically photograph around 30 to 40 families during the fall season, and every year I have to turn families away simply because there are not enough evenings and weekends to fit everyone in.
If you have a specific date in mind, are hoping for a weekend session, or are planning photos for holiday cards, I recommend reaching out early.
That way, we have plenty of time to plan everything together, from choosing the perfect location to deciding what everyone will wear.
What Can You Expect During Your Malibu Family Session?
If your family has never had professional photos taken before, it is completely normal to feel a little nervous.
Many parents tell me beforehand that they are worried their children won’t cooperate, that everyone will feel awkward, or that their kids won’t sit still long enough for beautiful photos.
The good news?
That is exactly why my approach is different.
Your session is not about forcing your family into stiff poses or asking children to behave perfectly for an hour.
Instead, we focus on connection.
We’ll walk along the beach, play in the sand, explore the coastline, and enjoy the experience together. I’ll guide you throughout the session so you always know what to do, but I also leave room for the spontaneous moments that make your family unique.
Afterward, one of the compliments I hear most often is how easy and fun the session was.
Parents are often surprised by how quickly the time goes by.
They tell me things like:
“That was so much easier than I expected.”
“The kids had so much fun.”
“I can’t believe how natural the photos feel.”
And that is exactly what I hope for.
Your family photos should be an experience you enjoy, not another stressful thing to check off your list.
Why I Believe Family Photography Is Worth Investing In
Your children will never be this age again.
That sounds simple, but it is something I think about often after more than 2 decades (I’m dating myself!) of photographing families.
The baby who is taking her first steps on the beach today will eventually be the teenager who doesn’t want to be in pictures.
The little hands holding yours today will someday be much bigger.
The way your children laugh, the way they run toward you, the way they fit perfectly in your arms right now, these are the moments that change before we realize it.
That is why I believe professional photography is so valuable.
Your photographs are not just about what your family looked like during this season of life.
They are about remembering what it felt like.
Years from now, I want you to look back at these images and remember the joy, the connection, and the love that surrounded your family during this exact moment.
That is the reason I do what I do.

Honestly? This is one of the biggest concerns parents have before their session.

My job is to create an environment where your family feels comfortable and connected. The less pressure everyone feels, the more genuine the images become.
