Looking for a Malibu Maternity Photographer? Here’s Everything You Need to Know

When Should You Schedule Your Session with a Malibu Maternity Photographer?

While your session will be held during your 30-34th week, I recommend booking your session a few months in advance, especially if you’re hoping for a weekend evening session in Malibu. My most popular dates, especially during the beautiful spring and fall months, always fill quickly.

A Malibu maternity session is about more than just taking pretty photos. It’s about preserving this incredibly short season of life before your family changes forever. Years from now, I want you to look back at your images and remember not just what you looked like, but what this moment felt like.

Why I Love Photographing Maternity Sessions in Malibu

There is something truly special about photographing maternity sessions along the Malibu coastline.

While there are many beautiful beaches throughout Southern California, Malibu offers a combination of landscapes that make each session feel unique. Many of the beaches here sit below dramatic cliffs, which means you often get the best of both worlds: beautiful views from above, along with a stunning beach setting once you make your way down to the water.

One of my favorite things about photographing maternity sessions in Malibu is the variety we can create during one session. We might begin with soft, natural images in a grassy field overlooking the ocean, then walk down toward the beach for those beautiful sunset portraits with the waves behind you.

The result is a gallery that feels full and complete, without feeling overly posed or repetitive.

I love creating images that feel natural, emotional, and timeless. My goal is never for your photos to look like a collection of stiff poses. I want them to feel like you!

Why Choose Me as Your Malibu Maternity Photographer?

After more than 20 years photographing women, families, and some of life’s most meaningful milestones, I’ve learned that maternity photography is about so much more than creating beautiful images.

It’s about helping you feel comfortable, confident, and completely yourself during a season that goes by much faster than you realize.

As a Malibu photographer who specializes in maternity sessions, I create light-filled, natural images that capture the connection and emotion of this incredible time in your life. My goal is never to make you feel like you have to know what to do in front of the camera. That’s my job.

I’ll guide you through the entire experience, from choosing the right location to helping you with flattering poses and natural movement. I know how to photograph women in ways that make them feel beautiful while still looking like themselves.

One of the compliments I hear most often after a maternity session is how easy and fun it was.

Many clients tell me they expected to feel awkward in front of the camera, but instead the session felt like a fun experience with their partner or family. They’re able to relax, enjoy the beautiful Malibu setting, and focus on this special moment together.

That’s exactly what I want for every maternity session I photograph.

I very recently photographed a beautiful maternity session for a gorgeous mama-to-be who assured me before her session that she was absolutely unphotogenic and would be completely awkward in front of the camera. As much as I tried to tell her that she was wrong and not to worry, I’m 99% certain that she didn’t believe me.

Fast forward to the day of her session, she showed up to the beach looking stunning in a gorgeous, bump-friendly gown from Baltic Born (my fav place for maternity dresses)!

It only took her a few minutes to relax and get into the groove of having photos taken, and before I think she even knew it she and her sweet husband were having a great time playing and cuddling on the beach. The images turned out just beautifully (if I do say so myself!), and she absolutely loved them. Here is the sweet Google review she left for me 🙂

The Best Time to Take Malibu Maternity Photos

One of the most common questions I receive is, “When should I schedule my maternity photos?”

In my experience, the ideal time is between 30 and 34 weeks of pregnancy.

This timeframe allows us to capture that beautiful, round belly while you’re still feeling comfortable and mobile.

For first-time moms, I often recommend scheduling closer to the 34-week mark. Many women carrying their first baby still feel great at this stage and love having that fuller pregnancy shape.

For moms who are expecting their second, third, or subsequent baby, I usually recommend planning a little earlier, closer to 30 weeks. Every pregnancy is different, but many moms notice they show earlier with later pregnancies.

Of course, every pregnancy is unique, so the most important thing is choosing a time when you feel your best.

What to Expect During Your Malibu Maternity Session

If you’ve never had professional photos taken before, you might be wondering what actually happens during a maternity session.

Will I know how to pose?

What should I do with my hands?

What if I feel awkward?

These are questions I hear all the time, and I completely understand. Being in front of the camera can feel intimidating, especially during pregnancy when your body is changing and you may not feel like yourself.

The good news is: you don’t need to know what to do!

That’s my job.

After more than 20 years photographing women and families, I know how to guide you through a session in a way that feels natural and comfortable. I’ll help with flattering poses, gentle direction, and small movements that create images that feel relaxed and genuine.

I don’t want your photos to look like a series of stiff poses. I want them to feel like a reflection of this season of your life.

The little moments are often my favorites:

A quiet moment looking out at the ocean.

Your partner placing a hand on your belly.

Walking together along the shoreline.

Laughing because the wind picked up your dress.

Those are the moments that tell your story.

Worried You Won’t Feel Beautiful in Your Maternity Photos? I’ve Got You!

It’s one of the biggest concerns that I hear from expecting moms:

“I don’t know if I’ll feel comfortable being photographed right now.”

And I completely understand.

Pregnancy is an incredible experience, but it can also be a season where your body feels unfamiliar. Many women tell me they’re worried they won’t feel beautiful with the extra weight they’re carrying, or they won’t know how to look natural in front of the camera.

This is exactly why choosing an experienced photographer matters.

My job is not just to take photos. My job is to help you feel confident.

I’ve spent more than two decades learning how to pose photograph women in the most flattering ways. I know how to guide your best angels that feel natural, how to use beautiful light, and how to create images that highlight the beauty of this incredible season.

You don’t need to arrive knowing how to pose.

You don’t need to be a model.

You just need to show up, and I’ll take care of the rest.

The women who tell me they “aren’t photogenic” are often the ones who are the most surprised by how much they love their images!

Usually, the difference isn’t that they suddenly became comfortable in front of a camera. The difference is having someone who knows how to guide them.

Should Your Partner or Children Join Your Malibu Maternity Session?

Absolutely!

While maternity photos celebrate the incredible experience of carrying your baby, they’re also about documenting your family before everything changes.

For many of my clients, this session happens during such a special in-between moment. Maybe it’s their last pregnancy. Maybe it’s their final season as a family of two. Maybe they’re preparing to welcome their first baby and are soaking in every moment of this transition.

Including your partner or children allows us to capture the bigger story of your family.

Some of my favorite maternity images aren’t just portraits of mom. They’re the moments of connection:

A partner looking at your growing belly.

A child feeling excited about becoming a big brother or sister.

A family walking hand-in-hand along the beach.

Those moments become even more meaningful as your children grow.

Because years from now, you won’t just remember what you wore or what the sunset looked like.

You’ll remember the excitement, the anticipation, and the love you felt while waiting to meet your baby.

What Should You Wear for Malibu Maternity Photos?

When it comes to choosing what to wear for your maternity session, my biggest advice is to choose something that makes you feel beautiful and comfortable.

Long, flowing dresses are always a beautiful choice for beach maternity photos because they photograph beautifully with movement. The ocean breeze, soft fabrics, and natural movement all help create images that feel effortless.

I typically recommend choosing neutral, soft colors that complement the natural beauty of Malibu. Shades like cream, beige, soft gray, muted blues, and earthy tones photograph beautifully against the coastline.

The most important thing is that your outfit feels like you.

Your photos should reflect your style, not a trend that you’ll look back on years from now and wonder why you chose it.

How Far in Advance Should You Book Your Session with a Malibu Maternity Photographer?

I recommend reaching out a few months before your desired session date.

While I do my best to accommodate families whenever possible, the most popular dates, especially sunset sessions and weekends, often book in advance.

Planning early also gives us time to talk through all of the details:

Choosing the perfect location.

Finding the best time of day.

Planning outfits.

Making sure everything feels relaxed and easy.

The goal is for your maternity session to feel like something you’re excited about, not another thing added to your pregnancy to-do list.

Frequently Asked Questions About Malibu Maternity Photos

What is the best time of year for Malibu maternity photos?

Malibu is beautiful year-round, which is one of the reasons I love photographing maternity sessions here.
The soft coastal light makes every season special, but many clients especially love spring and fall because the weather is comfortable and the sunsets are beautiful.

That said, the most important factor is not the season. It’s choosing a time during your pregnancy when you feel comfortable and excited to document this stage of life.

How many weeks pregnant should you be for maternity photos?

The ideal time for maternity photos is usually between 30 and 34 weeks of pregnancy.
This gives you a beautifully round belly while still allowing you to move comfortably during your session.

For first pregnancies, many women love scheduling closer to 34 weeks. For later pregnancies, I often recommend closer to 30 weeks since many moms show earlier with subsequent pregnancies.
Every pregnancy is different, so we’ll choose a timeframe that feels right for you.

Can my husband or partner be included in my maternity photos?

Yes!

I actually encourage it.

Your maternity photos are not only about documenting your pregnancy. They’re about capturing the excitement, connection, and love your family feels as you prepare to welcome your baby.
Some of my favorite images are the quiet moments between couples: holding hands, laughing together, and soaking in the anticipation of becoming parents.

Can my children be included in my Malibu maternity session?

Absolutely.

Including your children is a wonderful way to document this special transition in your family.

Whether this is your first baby or you’re adding another child to your family, these images become a beautiful reminder of what life looked like before your baby arrived. I love creating photographs that capture genuine connection and emotion, not forced smiles or perfect poses.

Do I need to know how to pose for maternity photos?

Not at all.

Many of my clients tell me they were nervous before their session because they had never had professional photos taken before.

You don’t need to know what to do. That’s where my experience comes in.

I’ll guide you throughout your session with flattering poses, natural movement, and direction that feels relaxed rather than forced.

My goal is for you to feel comfortable, confident, and like yourself.

Is El Matador Beach too difficult for a maternity session?

REAL TALK: It might be. It depends on your comfort level and how you’re feeling during your pregnancy.

El Matador is one of Malibu’s most beautiful and dramatic locations, but it does require more walking, stairs, and a bit of an adventurous spirit.

For expecting moms who want an easier experience, Mugu Beach and El Pescador are often wonderful options.

The goal is always to choose a location where you can relax and enjoy your session.

Your Malibu Maternity Photos Are About More Than This Moment

Pregnancy is such a unique season of life.

It’s exciting, emotional, and honestly, it goes by much faster than most people realize.

Your baby will be here before you know it. Your family will change. The tiny details you’re experiencing right now; the anticipation, the excitement, the feeling of waiting to meet your little one, will become memories.

That’s why I believe maternity photos are so, so valuable.

They aren’t just about documenting what you looked like while you were pregnant.

They’re about remembering what this time felt like.

Years from now, I want you to look back at these images and remember the joy, the love, and the excitement that surrounded your growing family.

Malibu is an incredible place to create those memories, and I would love to help you document this beautiful season!
